Methods: Nine PD patients (age: mean ± SD, 61.2 ± 10.9 years; 6 males, 3 females) and 6 OPCA patients (age: mean ± SD, 45.8 ± 10.1 years; 4 males; 2 females) were studied. Images from each [F]FDOPA scan were under statistical comparison on a voxel by voxel basis between two groups using statistical parametric mapping (SPM99). Results: Significantly decreased [F]FDOPA uptake of PD patients in comparison with OPCA patients were found in the bilateral putamen and bilateral anterior cingulate gyri (uncorrected P<0.001; PET/SPECT mode: two-sample t-test; contrast: OPCA as 1 and PD as -1) Conclusion: We demonstrated the differences of [F]FDOPA striatal uptake between the OPCA and PD groups using SPM in voxel level analysis. In this study we showed significant difference of dopaminergic function in the bilateral putamen and bilateral anterior cingulate gyri between the two groups. Direct measurement of dopaminergic neuronal function using [F]FDOPA is of value in differential diagnosis between PD and OPCA.

Complementary PET studies of striatal neuronal function in the differential diagnosis between multiple system atrophy and Parkinson's disease.

We used PET with the tracers [18F]fluorodeoxyglucose (FDG), [18F]fluorodopa (FDOPA) and [11C]raclopride (RACLO) to study striatal glucose and dopa metabolism, and dopamine D2 receptor binding, respectively, in nine patients with multiple system atrophy. Ten patients with classical Parkinson's disease were investigated with the same three PET tracers' and three separate groups, each of 10 health...

Graphical Abstract: ChemistryOpen 4/2015

The cover picture shows the differences in brain metabolism of a healthy young and a healthy old subject, as well as a patient suffering from Parkinson’s disease (left to right) uncovered by 6-[F]FDOPA-positron emission tomography (PET). Morbus Parkinson occurs when nerve cells that produce dopamine begin to die. The shortage of dopamine leads to movement problems in affected individuals. 6-[F]...

Cinnamaldehyde attenuates dopaminergic neuronal loss in substantia nigra and induces midbrain catalase activity in a mouse model of Parkinson’s disease

Background and Objective: Parkinson's disease (PD) is the second most common neurodegenerative disease after Alzheimer's disease that affects 3% of the population. PD involves a progressive degeneration of dopaminergic neurons in the substantia nigra pars compacta (SNc) and subsequent loss of dopamine. Dopamine depletion leads to movement dysfunction and is accompanied with tremor, rigid muscle...

F-18 FP-CIT PET in Multiple System Atrophy of the Cerebellar Type: Additional Role in Treatment

We evaluated the difference in the status of dopamine transporters (DATs) depending on Parkinsonism, cerebellar, and autonomic features using F-18 FP-CIT positron emission tomography (PET) in multiple system atrophy with cerebellar ataxia (MSA-C). We also assessed whether the DAT PET could be useful in the management of MSA-C. Forty-nine patients who were clinically diagnosed as possible to pro...
